Competitions

The Southern Flute Festival competitions are open in the following three categories:

HIGH SCHOOL COMPETITION
The Southern Flute Festival High School Competition is open to high school flutists whose age are not more than 19 years old. The competition will consist in only one live performance held during the Southern Flute Festival on June 2-3, 2018. The Southern Flute Festival will provide a staff accompanist for the competition. Competitors may elect to bring their own accompanists at their own expense. Competitors will be allowed to rehearse with the assigned staff accompanist for a half-hour during the festival. Competition applicants must apply by May 18, 2018.

REPERTOIRE
One solo piece (with or without piano accompaniment) of the applicant’s choice.

First place winner $300.00
Second place winner $200.00
Third place winner $100.00

YOUNG ARTIST COMPETITION
The Southern Flute Festival Young Artist Competition is open to flutists who are age 32 or younger. A jury will select the finalists through a preliminary round based on recordings submitted with the application. Recordings must be unedited and SmartMusic is acceptable for the preliminary round. Up to three finalists will perform a live audition in Hattiesburg, MS on June 2, 2018. The Southern Flute Festival will provide a staff accompanist for the competition. Competitors may elect to bring their own accompanists at their own expense. Each finalist will be allowed to rehearse with the assigned staff accompanist for a half-hour during the festival. Finalists will be notified of their status by May 21, 2018. Competition applicants must apply by May 14, 2018.

REPERTOIRE
Preliminary Round
A movement of any J. S. Bach Sonata
One solo piece (with or without piano accompaniment) of the applicant’s choice.

Final Round
Fantasie in F-sharp Minor, TWV 40:11 by Georg Philipp Telemann (Barenreiter) – with repeats and ornaments at the performers’ discretion

One solo piece (with or without piano accompaniment) of the applicant’s choice. The piece should not exceed 7 minutes.

MASTER CLASS PERFORMERS COMPETITION
The Master-class Performers Competition is open to flutists who are age 32 or younger. Applicants should submit a live, unedited recording of a piece of his or her choice. The Southern Flute Festival will provide a staff accompanist for the competition. Competitors may elect to bring their own accompanists at their own expense. The format of the master-class will be described to winners prior of the festival. Winners will be notified of their status by May 21, 2018. Competition applicants must apply by May 18, 2018.

Application Process
To be eligible to the competitions, applicants are required to send a complete registration form with payment of fees, and submit the appropriate recording.

– All judges’ decisions are final
